For centuries, the dromedary was the only means of transport in the desert. Nomads and Tuaregs travelled for weeks, sometimes months, to reach their destinations. Huge caravans, often with more than 1,000 animals, crossed the Sahara. Tombouctou, Mopti and Zinder are just a few of the legendary destinations along the old caravan routes.
